No error in the log of your webserver or in MySQL?

Are you trying to install version 2.x.x? I would recommend version 3.x.x

filter_var shoud exist in 5.4 according to the documentation:

Do you have more problems with your PHP?

Fatal error: Class 'Symfony\Component\Filesystem\Filesystem' not found in /home/xxx/public_html/install/engine/step_6.php on line 112

"It appears that PHP5 on FreeBSD does not ship with the PECEL Filter extension enabled by default. This means filter_var() will throw fatal errors"

Had to contact hosting provider to to enable it and now everythink works.
