Why exactly can't Fork be installed in a subdirectory? It seems to me like it would be easy enough to add a way to be non root for Fork to work, is it just that it hasn't gotten around to, or is it something that won't be added?

All links are constructed starting with /, which means all links should be altered.
You could try to alter the rewritebase in the .htaccess-file, but this is untested.
